Do you Know What a Transputer Is?

The transputer (TRANSistor comPUTER) was an innovative computer design of the 1980s from INMOS, a British semiconductor company based in Bristol. When the transputer was first reveiled, many thought this exceptional concept should be the next revolution in microprocessor technology. As you may already have guessed, things didn’t happen as expected: today, the transputer is a largely forgotten concept (although some initial ideas may be found in modern processor architectures).

In the early 1980s it became clear that conventional CISC processors were very limited in terms of scalable performance. One concept to solve the problem was RISC, which became the defacto standard for high performance workstations in the late 1990’s. As RISC architectures were quite expensive in most cases (although ARM was not), the transputer was intended to offer high end performance without being costy.

The idea behind the transputer was quite simple: instead of creating a very complex processor, the transputer consisted of a family of chips. Each chip had a very simple design and multiple chips could be wired together to form an entire computer. Each transputer chip was in fact some kind of a microcontroller and was able to boot and operate by itself, it had its own RAM, a serial bus and an embedded real-time OS, but it fulfilled only very few complex tasks. Computer vendors would then combine transputer chips like building blocks and design a system that would fulfill specific requirements.

A single transputer chip could be used to power a disk controller for example, while larger numbers of them could be used to create a high end workstation. The advantage of the design was its extreme scalability and its low cost hardware. The transputer chip core itself was a simplified, microcoded CISC-like 8-bit processor (it ran a real-time OS to control the processor), while the available processors can be categorised into three groups: the 16-bit T2 series, the 32-bit T4 series and the 32-bit T8 series with 64-bit IEEE 754 floating-point support.

The transputer was a parallel architecture by design, and it required a multitasking operating system to take full advantage of the transputer hardware. Transputers were intended to be programmed using the occam programming language, which had also been developed inhouse at INMOS, and allowed to directly take advantage of the transputer hardware design. Later on other languages such as C, FORTRAN, Ada and Pascal became available too.
One of the major disadvantages of the transputer was the lack of an MMU or virtual memory support, which prevented UNIX to be ported to the transputer architecture (although there were ports of some UNIX-like OSes).

The first transputers were announced in 1983 and released in 1984, and various models followed during the later 1980’s. The final problem of the transputer may have been that it was still too costy to compete in the microcontroller market, while it coulnd’t complete with the growing success off the high end RISC designs. At the end, the was no real market for the transputer.

After many technical problems and delays during the development of the next generation T9000 transputer, INMOS got into financial trouble and was finally sold to SGS-Thomson, whose focus was the embedded systems market, and eventually the T9000 project was abandoned.

The most well known machine may have been the Atari Transputer Workstation, which was first introduced at the November 1987 COMDEX under the name Abaq. It was basically a modified Atari Mega ST with 512kB of RAM connected to a 20 MHz T800-20 transputer board and 4MB of RAM, plus a Blossom video system with 1MB of dual-ported RAM. A fully equipped Atari Transputer Workstation could contain 17 transputers offering 10 MIPS each.

Atari used HeliOS as operating system on this machine, as UNIX could not be ported because of the lack of a transputer MMU. Nevertheless this allowed the Atari Transputer Workstation to run a large number of standard Unix utilities, including the X Window System as the machine’s graphical user interface (GUI).

How To Connect Two Computers (Dual Screen) Over Network

How to set up a Dual-Screen workstation with an additional computer.
What we try to achieve: connect a laptop or another computer to an existing computer and have the ability to control both computers with a single mouse and keyboard. (Without any hardware, but over the network)

If you have another laptop or a pc computer sitting around and is wondering how you can connect the two computers and use each computers’ own processing power individually to multi task and speedup your working environment, there is a very easier way to accomplish this dream of yours. In today’s blog post I will cover all the possible ways to achieve this.

If you do have a dual display supported video card, what you will be doing is using a single PC and spread out the processing power between activities and expanding the working area horizontally, with the use of an additional screen. But what we are trying to do is take advantage of two separate high speed computers and use their individual processing power separating while having the capability to control them with single input devices and eventually setting up a DUAL-Screen workstation.

Option 1: Maxivista.com

You can use win2VNC and a VNC program such as ultraVNC, RealVNC, or TightVNC to accomplish the single input control feature.

Instructions for usage: you will have to install win2vnc on the computer that you wish to have the control and a VNC program on the other computer which you are going to be controlling using the other computers’ input devices. Both computers have to be connected to internet and relevant IP address will be shown after the program in run, which later will be needed in connecting each other.

Advantages:
– Share input devices (Mouse, keyboard) to control both computers and clipboards.
– Use each computers’ own processing power to perform tasks, yet both are connected together to allow single control.
– Dual monitor setup/workstation

Disadvantages:
– Most of the VNC programs I tried excluding maxivista do not allow mouse scrolling function on the controlled computer, but only on the controlling (main/server) computer.
– Even though both computers seemed connected, you are only controlling the computers, thus no applications or windows can be shared. This is what you have to really understand, each run on its own.
– You can not transfer files between two computers using these VNC programs although you can use other file transfer programs such as teamviwer etc. to connect the computers and transfer files.

Option 3: using hard ware gadgets.

FYI: This feature is knows as FVM which stands for Keyboard, Video, Mouse control. Mostly used for controlling several servers with a single mouse, keyboard and a monitor.

Surround Sound Wireless Speakers – Are They Worth It?

The goal of a surround sound system isn’t just to provide volume, it’s more concerned with creating a sound field which envelops the listener, generating ambience and providing directionality to a film’s sound effects, in other words, making you feel like you’re at the center of the action. In order to produce surround sound, you need multiple speakers (normally 6 or 8), linked to a receiver/amplifier. The most popular systems use a subwoofer for producing base sounds and 5 smaller speakers for the other channels. Some people think so-called 7.1 systems (which have two extra rear side channels) produce a more immersive experience; others think that the extra expense is not justified.

Whether you choose a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, dealing with all the wires can be a bit daunting and require a certain amount of effort if you want a good result. With 6 or 8 speakers involved, there are a lot of cables to manage. Surround sound wireless speakers can help to reduce the cabling problem. It also frames the use of computer technology tools with a specific purpose. The goal is not solely to learn how to make a concept map with great pictures or to develop an attractive Web site, but to imbed the use of educational technology within a task. In this way, the tools enhance and facilitate the learning process. This gives the learner a reason to use the application, and along the way, the learner understands how the application works.

By teaching your students to explore how different features of a given technology can help them succeed, you can make using technology a consistent and easy part of your students’ learning experience. We should continuously explore the advanced teaching method to help our educators and student make studying more effectively and perfectly.

Route 128: Birthplace of the Digital Age

When most people are asked to name the location of the Digital Age, the first place which comes to mind is Silicon Valley. While Silicon Valley has certainly played a key role in the Digital Age, its birthplace was 3,000 miles East within a circumferential highway around Boston named Route 128.

The original analog and early digital computers were built by companies during the 1950s which set up operations in the Greater Boston area. Major companies located in the broader Route 128 area included  Digital Equipment Corporation,  Data General,  Thermo Electron Corporation,  AnalogDevices,  Computervision,  GTE,  Polaroid,  Sun Microsystems,  BEA Systems,  EMC Corporation, and  Raytheon.

“The Magic Semicircle”

In 1955, Business Week ran an article titled “New England Highway Upsets Old Way of Life” and referred to Route 128 as “the Magic Semicircle”. Magic referred to the nascent computer science companies which emerged to change the world forever.

A key resource in the Boston area is MIT, as well as Harvard and several other universities that have developed technology expertise in specific areas: Boston University in photonics, for instance. Graduates of these institutions founded groundbreaking tech companies such as Digital and Data One. The founders of Digital Equipment were alumni of the Digital Computer Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Digital, located in Maynard, MA is best known for introducing the minicomputer to the information processing industry, a development that altered the way potential customers perceived the computer. In defining the needs of a new generation of computer users, Digital set the stage for the development of the personal computer and the workstation. In 1960 the company introduced its first computer, the PDP-1 (Program Data Processor). The PDP-1 came with a cathode-ray tube (CRT), a screen which allowed the user to see what was being entered and received from the central processing unit. Unlike the room-sized mainframe computers of the day, the PDP-1 was no larger than a refrigerator. In the fall of 1965 Digital unveiled the PDP-8. This machine triggered the explosive growth of the minicomputer industry, and the company grew from a small technical company to a major computer manufacturer.

Digital’s competitor, Westborough based Data General-One, was one of the first minicomputer firms from the late 1960s. Three of the four founders were former employees of Digital Equipment Corporation. Their first product, the Nova, Data General-One, made it one of the first minicomputer firms from the late 1960s. The Nova was a 16-bit minicomputer.

By the ’70s and early ’80s, the computer architectures driving the industry were developed by people working in companies such as Digital, Prime, and Data General. With the overwhelming dominance of the PC, however, the center of heat and light for the PC is Intel as the microprocessor provider and Microsoft as the operating system provider.

These computer technology companies were the key generators of economic growth in Massachusetts during the 1980s. The term “Massachusetts Miracle” refers to a period of economic growth in the state of Massachusetts during most of the 1980s. Previous to this, the state had been hit hard by deindustrialization and resulting unemployment. The growth was heavily centered in high-tech industry and financial services, within Boston and in its suburbs along Route 128. The expansion of the high tech industry along MA-128 has led to the term “128″ meaning more than just the road itself, but the technology area as a whole, much like Silicon Valley.

20th Century Business Model

The early success of Route 128 was their innovative technology and management style. Though cutting edge for it’s time, most companies lost their competitive edge by the mid 1980s. Digital is a good case study. Digital’s customers were mostly scientists and engineers who did not require technical support, the company provided virtually none of the software and maintenance services offered by its giant competitors. Digital did not spend its capital on software design and maintenance services, and passed its savings along to customers. With its lion share of the workstation market, it was content with its dominance in the core minicomputer market. However Digital was slow to adapt its product line to new markets.

By 1990, companies such as Digital, Data-One and Wang were unprepared for the 21st Century and the advent of cyberspace. Though Norwood, MA based Wang enjoyed far more success in the PC market, it succumbed to a hostile takeover. Digital had ignored IT consultants and trend analysts who predicted the old mainframe model was fast becoming obsolete.

IBM, which invented the PC, saw the potential of the consumer market for computers after the Apple company sold its first computer in 1978. The Route 128 companies lacked the vision to look for market other than big business as well as other software and hardware engineers.

Silicon Valley, in contrast, was ahead of the curve regarding the consumer computer market. Intel made strategic partnerships with IBM and other PC manufacturers, as well as partnering with Microsoft which placed Silicon Valley front and center of the the dot com boom.

Route 128 Today

Today, according to economists, venture capitalists, and technology executives, Boston’s strength lies in fields like Internet software and biotechnology, which are fueled by the concentration of talent flowing out of MIT, Harvard, Boston University and others. There remains, however, no comprehensive report of these figures since the Panic of 2008.

Greater Boston remains a global technology hub. It has a healthy competition with Silicon Valley. IBM’s Lotus Development Corp., based in Cambridge, is holding its own in groupware vs. Netscape and Microsoft. EMC Corp. in Hopkinton, Mass., is the world leader in computer data storage products and is on the leading edge of cloud computing. Open Market Inc., another Cambridge company, is successfully competing against Microsoft and Netscape in selling software for electronic commerce.

Boston’s greatest strength is that it remained relatively unscathed by the Dot Com Crash of 2000, which left a devastating impact on Silicon Valley in terms of the number of lost jobs. Another asset compared to Silicon Valley is Boston’s lower cost of living. Most of the companies are accessible by Boston’s old yet efficient public transit. While commercial and residential rental rates remain high, the cost of renting an apartment in Somerville or Medford is lower than in Silicon Valley. Even in the current turbulent housing market, housing prices in Greater Boston are competitive with Silicon Valley.

While Boston remains in the shadow of Silicon Valley, it shows no sign of disappearing as a region of IT innovation and development.

How to Record Guitar at Home Using Indirect Recording

Indirect recording is what I would call the “old school” method of actually plugging into a real guitar amplifier, and using a microphone to record the sound. Minimally this method requires an amplifier, one or two microphones, mic-preamp and a converter. However, a whole heap of other units can be added, for example eq’s, mixers, compressors etc.

Before we get too technical, let’s first talk about the signal path. The signal path is the path that the audio takes from the microphone to get into the computer, and what happens along the way. For example – a simple signal path beginning at your microphone and ending at your computer workstation may include the following units along the way.

Below is a very basic signal chain showing how the signal travels from your guitar to your computer via various units.

Guitar > Amp > Mic > Mic Pre-Amp > EQ > Compressor > Converter > Computer

This illustration shows that once your guitar is amped, the sound will be picked up by a microphone, then sent to the mic pre-amp, which will boost the signal, and make it loud enough to actually use. From there the sound source could be send to some sort of eq unit, and a compressor to alter the levels. Finally the signal is sent to the convertor which will allow the music to reach your computer. In 2005, a Cincinnati hobby-store owner, Lee Spievack, cut off his finger tip when showing a customer a model airplane (1). His brother, Alan Spievack, who is a medical research scientist, gave him a special powder to sprinkle on his finger. After taking the powder, Lee Spievack was astonished to find that his fingertip was growing back. Four weeks later, it looked as good as new (1). The powder he took was made from a substance called extracellular matrix. It was developed by scientists at the University of Pittsburgh’s McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine (1). The extracellular matrix powder is made from pig bladders (1), but it does not contain in pig cells (9). Instead, the matrix is composed of proteins, such as collagen (9), and connective tissue, which scientists believe stimulates the regeneration of tissue (1). The function of the extracellular matrix is to form a structure that helps cells generate any given body part (9). All animals have this special structure, as do developing babies (or fetuses). What Is Structured Cabling For Computer LAN Networks?

:: What is structured cabling?

Modern computer LAN (local area network) wiring has the concept of structured cabling.

With today’s high speed networks, people realize that the networking system must be broken up into shorter chunks that allow workstation wiring to be concentrated, with each cable length short enough to support the high data rate.

Based on aforementioned reasons, structured wiring standard has been developed to help define a computer wiring system that stays within the maximum wiring distance for various LAN topologies. For example, the horizontal cable wiring length is 100 meters for 100BaseT networks.

:: What do we do to observe the 100 meters wiring standard?

In order to achieve the wiring concentration standard, telecommunication rooms (wiring centers) are placed at planned locations in a building. These telecom rooms are then interconnected to provide the total network connectivity for the building.

This can be explained in a three stories building. At one same corner of each floor, a telecom rooms is constructed; these telecom rooms are then connected by backbone wiring (cables run vertically through the floors and link all telecom rooms together).

On each floor, a telecom room concentrates all workstation cables for that floor. Each workstation has a wall mounted jack. The network cable is terminated at that jack and runs directly to the telecom room. The cable may run in wire trays or conduit, or be draped over supports such as a drop ceiling. For larger floors, more than one telecom room may be needed.

The horizontal wires, which run from workstations on the same floor to the telecom room, are then terminated on punchdown termination, or directly onto a patch panel. The punchdown terminations or patch panels could be rack mounted (19″ or 23″ racks), cabinet mounted or wall mounted.

In the telecom room, network equipment such as a hub or switch is connected to each station cable, which electrically terminates the cable run. The hub or switch then passes the computer signal on to other work stations or servers, or even to other telecom rooms for ultimate connectivity with the entire network.

Telecom rooms on each floor are then connected together by backbone cabling (also called vertical cabling for floor to floor connections). These backbone cablings typically are done from floor to floor to floor.

Usually telecom rooms should be located directly above one another in order to minimize the cable runs length, but this also varies from building to building.

1. Fire ratings. Backbone cables must have standard imposed fire rating specifications. Typically this is OFNR (Optical Fiber Non-Conductive Riser) rated. If the backbone cable passes through plenum area (spaces in the building used for air return in air conditioning), the cable must be OFNP (Optical Fiber Non-conductive Plenum) rated.

2. Physical securing. Physical securing for vertical riser cables is also different than horizontal cables. So is the cable strength, since vertical riser cables need to have enough strength to support its own weight.

4.2 In Bangladesh , private sectors are advancing with IS development , but it is not the identical situation in the public sector. The reasons behind this may be the poor salary structure in the public service, which never give confidence to the prospective talents and system designers to join the public services. Most of the IT projects are donor funded; domestically financed IT projects rarely experience success like the donor projects.

4.3 However, RIBEC (Reforms in Budgeting and Expenditure Control) project, funded by DFID, has been considered as the most successful project in Bangladesh.

At the early stage of RIBEC project (Phase 2), it was observed that, the project was design to develop and modernise the budgeting and accounting system of the government of Bangladesh. The experts mainly dominated that phase, including lots of things to cover. There was lack of stakeholders’ involvement; problems were not recognised at the initial stage. Only a range of high-grade staff in the relevant field was given a general IT training. There was no follow up; no visible product was seen. Benefits were not identified. No system was developed to automate the budgeting and accounting system. So this phase 2 had experienced a massive failure. Having awful experience, the following phase (2A and 2B), a downsized project with specific output targets came up with analysing user requirements. This phase focused on sustainability and proved successful with sustainable solutions especially in the software development for budgeting and accounting Substantive training had been offered to the users of the systems. Stakeholders have been involved in the software development process and the local vendors who will be easily available in the future, developed the systems. When misapplied, they can waste tremendous amounts of time, effort, and money’.The USA, a Progressed and well structured country that is economically and technologically advanced, designed PRINCE AND SSADM, to meet their own requirements. It cannot be expected that these structured methodologies would equally suit the resource scarce developing countries. But the above discussions surmise that there is potential scope and rationale for applying PRINCE AND SSADM that would facilitate the developing countries for better project management and system development. But again, these methodologies need not be considered as the “ final conclusive critics”, rather these structural criteria should be used thoughtfully, tailored to manage projects efficiently and to develop effective information systems to cope with the challenge of change Management virtually.

Connectivity is standard in the Aspire D255 with three benchmarks USB 2.0 ports, VGA video output, SDHC/MMC card reader plus headphone & microphone jacks. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are provided as the basic wireless solutions, with a webcam and microphone integrated on the top of the screen.

The D255 has large keys with an intelligent layout with proper shortcuts. The best part though is the good key feedback and a similarly brilliant click in the keys. The only negative aspect of the D255’s keyboard is the lack of space for the palms. The touch pad is small but highly sensitive and merges itself into the palm rest area not appearing odd to the user.

The screen of the Aspire One D255 is less surprising. It has glossy coating leading to vibrant colors and a well lit LED to avoid reflections. The screen is, however, well designed, and the display is perfect from deviating angles.

The speakers are satisfactory but competent enough. The music listening experience is an exception though without any real bass or treble, but acceptable. For other multimedia like movies or online media the user will have to use headphones.

Although the Acer netbook boasts nothing extraordinary, it does, however, carry a very impressive design. There are multiple colors available for the top and palm rest area, while a majority of the net-book is black. Acer Aspire One D255 comes in red, black, white, blue and brown mixed with a black body.

The D255′s applications are limited however, with the 2.1 Android, which has limited choices for applications. Initially designed for touch screen devices and now stuck with a small net-book, the Android OS is no good for this machine. Windows 7 Starter is, however, a great but limited option. The 1 GB RAM is not enough to drive the Windows OS. With no notable improvements to the laptop battery life, there is a serious battery life issue when running Windows 7. The amazing prospect of the Android 2.1 OS is that the booting time is a mere 15 seconds.

All in all, the D255 has a good processor and the ability to switch easily between Windows & Android.  The lacking features are the battery life and chipset features, which should have had some radical upgrades. For a price of almost £200, the D255 might just tempt the odd one out, but this netbook will probably not make waves.
